Egypt plans AI-powered digital systems for the country’s 2027 national population census.
Egyptian officials discuss digital transformation and AI integration for the 2027 national census project.
Egypt is preparing a technology-driven census system for 2027 using artificial intelligence, digital platforms, integrated databases, and smart analytics to modernize national statistical operations.
Head of Egypt’s Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics (CAPMAS) Akram El Gohary met with Minister of Communications and Information Technology Raafat Hindi to discuss expanding cooperation on digital transformation projects and preparations for Egypt’s 2027 population, housing, and establishments census.
The project is considered one of Egypt’s most important national statistical operations and aims to provide a comprehensive and integrated database covering population distribution, buildings, and economic establishments across the country.
Officials said the data generated by the census will support policymakers, planners, and decision-makers in shaping development strategies across multiple sectors.
“The 2027 census aims to create a comprehensive, integrated, and digitally powered national database.”
The meeting focused on strengthening CAPMAS’s digital infrastructure, upgrading technological applications, and supplying census representatives with tablet devices to facilitate field operations.
Discussions also covered leveraging Egypt’s governmental digital transformation infrastructure, the Digital Egypt Platform, integrated state databases, and artificial intelligence technologies to support the census process.
Officials said AI tools could help census workers convert spoken responses into written text using speech-to-text technologies while also enabling deeper data analysis and extraction of advanced insights from census results.
The discussions additionally addressed broader digital transformation efforts within CAPMAS, including plans to develop an AI-powered smart assistant for the agency’s website to improve user experience and facilitate access to statistical information.
According to officials, the adoption of advanced digital methodologies aligns with Egypt’s broader national digital transformation strategy.
The system is expected to provide:
The data will support ministries, state institutions, and various public and private sector stakeholders relying on accurate statistical information.
CAPMAS plans to strengthen technological infrastructure and digital applications ahead of the 2027 census.
Artificial intelligence tools are expected to support speech-to-text conversion and advanced analytics.
Officials aim for up to 50% of households to complete census forms independently through digital systems.
The system aims to provide continuously updated population and establishment data nationwide.
Akram El Gohary said the census project depends heavily on ongoing cooperation with the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology, particularly regarding the use of digital tools and record-based census methodologies.
He added that CAPMAS aims to increase self-enumeration rates so that up to 50% of households complete their census data independently through digital systems.
During the meeting, Tawfik Kandil presented an overview of the census project and its proposed implementation mechanisms using modern technologies.
Senior officials from CAPMAS and the Ministry of Communications also attended the meeting.
Egypt’s preparations for the 2027 census reflect a broader push toward data-driven governance, digital transformation, and the use of artificial intelligence across public sector operations.
Officials say the new census system aims not only to modernize statistical collection methods, but also to create a continuously updated national database capable of supporting long-term development planning and faster government decision-making.
